Current Health Event: Shark Attack

Shark Attack

Over Memorial Day weekend a lady by the name of Maria Korcsmaros was attacked by a shark. She is a 52 year old personal trainer and aerobics instructor. She had been swimming on Sunday at Newport Beach around 4 p.m.  Maria had been swimming along the buoys about 150 yards offshore as a part of her training for an Ironman competition scheduled for July in Canada. Maria had multiple tooth marks on her right side starting from her shoulder area going down to her lower pelvis. She also had lacerations on her right arm, an open chest wound, and multiple rib fractures and had lost about a liter of blood. Doctors credit her level of physical fitness for her ability to survive the attack. She was able to tread water and hold her own until helped arrived which is pretty remarkable. Maria is now recovering at the hospital and taking antibiotics to help stave off any infection. They yet do not know whether she'll have use of her arm.

Reflection: This event relates to me because it is very important to know the dangers people can face by just going to the beach. You need to be aware of things that can wrong so that you can always be prepared. I go to the beach a lot and I am very glad I came across this devastating event.
